Reflecting back sometimes can be very painful. I just put up some pictures and a video from Alex's PICU room at Rainbow Babies and Children. The first picture is of him not long after he got back to the PICU from surgery. The next few show a very depleted ALex up in his chair. He would get a second pint of blood a few days after the pictures were taken.(he got his first pint in surgery) Then there is the decoration picture and video. We thought we might have to stay through Christmas so we made sure we got decorated up. Some staff memebers and some friends helped in the endeavor. Celebrating Christmas is best at home but the birth of Christ came be celebrated from a hospital room too.
I personally have a difficult time looking at the pictures. 2009 was a rough one. Alex was in the hospital a total of three times for over 7 weeks. The last time in December was the longest at 21 days. In February and in December the stays were so difficult. Watching Alex struggle to the degree that he did is something that no parent wants to experience. Yes, God is ABSOLUTELY in control!! Understanding that is clear when you watch the challenges of the highly skilled and gifted medical staff become so challenged when trying to figure out the "things" of Alex.
Now after the surgery I can better see how "bad" Alex's health was throughout 2009. By the end of November, he could barely sleep(maybe 4 hours total a night for well over a month!) did not want to eat much, and could not sit upright in his chair. It is always easier to see in hindsight. We are very thankful that that period is past us. We pray that this is a year of rebuilding and healing. What we do without a loving God who holds us when we hurt and gives us the strength to endure. Thanks you Jesus!!

Beth I feel for you on this one. I still have a very hard time looking at Matthew scrapbooks through the years. Each picture I remember the condition he was in. I knew out struggles at that time and I just cry through them. AND AMEN to what you said about God. Truly amazing and also praying for the future as always and always will.
